Charles James Turrell (British, 1845-1932), a portrait miniature of Lady Julia Georgina Affleck painted on the occasion of her marriage to Sir Robert Affleck, 7th baronet, signed and dated 1886, on ivory, subject and artist engraved on reverse, 10.1 by 7.5cm, unmarked gold and guilloché enamel framed, Ivory Act Exemption Certificate No: 8A5X1XNS.
Charles James Turrell (British, 1845-1932), initially found success stateside in New York City as a young man exhibiting and selling his 'cabinet portraits'. He is best remembered as a miniature painter, exhibiting annually at the Royal Academy for three decades. His sitters included: Queen Victoria, Queen Mary, Queen Alexandra, Queen Maud of Norway, Gladstone and other notables. In America, he painted members of the Vanderbilt, Whitney and Morgan families of New York, the Armorys of Boston and the McCormicks and Ryersons of Chicago, among others.
Lady Affleck (1863-1944) is remembered for her reputed reputation for eccentricity and her extravagance. Apparently an actress before her marriage, she is credited with profligate spending on high-living, sumptuous carriages and clothes. In 1914 she obtained a divorce from Sir Robert Affleck on the grounds of cruelty and desertion. Subsequently, she worked as a shop assistant and under the name of "Madame Julie”, later gaining a reputation as a successful business woman.
